I think maybe I've read one too many of these "evil ladies with secret books" lately because nothing here shocked, surprised or thrilled me. Still, it’s not always clear whether we should root for Bartz’s characters, whose flaws may reflect the asymmetric costs of success for women but strain any impulse toward compassion: Often they are obsessively preoccupied with insecurities about their achievements, looks and abilities in relation to their peers — the very same women they supposedly identify as allies. The Herd is an elite, women-only coworking space in New York City created by beauty-mogul and businesswoman Eleanor Walsh. In-the-know New Yorkers crawl over each other to apply for membership to this community that prides itself on mentorship and empowerment. The twists were twisty, and I enjoyed the drama especially!

But, because Katie, Hana and Eleanor are more “concepts” than characters whose voices all sound alike, such a potentially complex narrative structure barely registers.
